The Erg
An erg is a huge sand dune or group of sand dunes. Erg Chebbi is located only about 26 km west of the Algerian frontier; the two villages of Merzouga and Khamlia border it. The erg is 16 km wide (east-west) and 33 km long (North-south) The erg is accessible by camel (recommended), 4WD, delta planes, quads, and motocross. The lodging can only be found in some of the oases in the erg.

The Oases
Erg Chebbi contains a few oases; the biggest Oasis is in the town of Merzouga itself. The second biggest oasis and the most touristic, is in the heart of the erg. This oasis has Berber tents made from goat and camel hides where tourists usually stay for a very cheap price. If needed, the staff in the oasis can provide food. The staff also plays traditional music around a campfire to entertain tourists. This oasis as well as many hotels in the region provides snowboards and skis for "sandboarding.."
