Community Softball:
Everyone is welcome to join our Sunday softball league. There are many different teams, with people from many different nationalities. There are approximately 5-7 teams each year. As years pass some teams may fall apart, but new teams are created. The softball games and tournament are held at the Rabat American School.
Softball Rules:
In our league you start with one strike and one ball. We count foul tips as half strikes only on the second strike. Each team must have two minorities, either two women or two children under the age of 15, or one woman and one child. Each team is required to have a minimum of 8 players on the field including the 2 minorities; however if you only have 8 players you may call for the other team to self-pitch. Self pitch is when one team pitches to themselves and they only have 3 pitches and you have to hit one of them or you’re out. Our community softball league uses slow pitch, which means we pitch the ball in a lob. Each player may only hit one out-of-the-park homerun per game and have it count as a homerun. The second out-of-the-park homerun is only counted as a single, but all players on the bases also advance one base. Each team is supposed to umpire a game every weekend. If the two umpires you chose don’t show up and no one on your team is there to umpire, your team automaticaly forfeits its next match or previous match depending on whether you already played that weekend. Except for the minorities, there is no real age limit, however, it is up to the team to decide and we hope they use their better judgement not to take players with a greater risk of injury.
Fees:
Each team is required to pay a total fee of 2200Dh. This fee goes to the equipement such as bats and gloves. Although the league provides gloves, they are not very good and often in use so we suggest that you bring your own gloves. The money is also used to pay for playing time. We must provide the school with money in order to be permitted to use the field. Thirdly, the money goes into the end-of-year banquet, where we announce the winner of the softball tournament.
Seasons:
There are two seasons per year. The first season in the year is the spring season from February to June during which we play a round robin until the last week where we play a tournament. Then the second season is the fall season from September to December, when the same round robin occurs. The banquet announces the tournament winner.
Times:
Games go from 9:30-2:00 on Sunday. The games last either 7 innings or an hour and a half, whichever is reached first.
